Three questions, one minute

Sowpath asks what an experienced neighbor would ask — then does the date math and the shopping math.

  1. Step 1 of 5, Where is your garden: ZIP code 10001 typed in, with the hint Zone 7b, last frost around Mar 30.

    Where do you garden?

Your ZIP code gives your USDA hardiness zone and typical frost dates — looked up on your phone. Outside the US, pick your zone by hand.

  2. Step 2 of 5, What are you planting in: containers, raised beds (selected), in-ground or flower bed.

    What kind of plot?

Pots on a balcony, raised beds, in-ground or a flower bed. Then sun, size, what you want to grow and your budget.

  3. What to plant: cherry tomato, bell pepper and bush beans with plant-out and harvest dates and a Search on Amazon button for each.

    What do you get?

5–10 plants with start-indoors, sowing, planting-out and harvest dates, plus a shopping list with quantities.

Questions from the potting bench

Is Sowpath free?
Yes. Free on iPhone, with no subscriptions, no in-app purchases and no ads.
Does Sowpath use my location?
No. You type your ZIP code and the app looks up your zone on the phone. The ZIP code is never sent to our servers.
Where do the frost dates come from?
From long-term climate normals (NOAA, 1991–2020) for weather stations near your ZIP code. They're typical dates, not a forecast — a late cold snap can still happen, so check your local extension office.
I don't live in the US. Can I still use it?
Yes. Choose your hardiness zone by hand and Sowpath uses typical dates for that zone, marked as approximate. Shopping links always open amazon.com.
Are the quantities exact?
They're estimates based on the size you enter — for example, soil to fill a raised bed 10 inches deep. Prices are rough too. Check packages before you buy.

Plant the right thing at the right time.
